Meal Groups

Did you know that for lunch and dinner we not only serve our residents, but also anyone in the community who is hungry? We do this 365 days a year and serve over 1,500 meals daily (including breakfast for our residents). Our last fiscal year we served around 560,000 meals! All of this was done with the help of our hundreds of Meal Group volunteers.

To keep our kitchen sustainable and accommodate the high volume of need, groups must sponsor lunch and dinner shifts. It works out to about $0.50 per person for lunch and about $0.80 per person for dinner. Student and military groups are exempt from the sponsorship requirements.

THE PROCESS

Meal Groups must have at least 5 volunteers, but more no than 10 per shift. Each group must appoint a Group Leader(s) who must be there any time the group volunteers. The Group Leader must complete the following steps on behalf of the group:

STEP ONE: Complete a background screening. We kindly ask that all our volunteers cover the $8.00 processing fee, but if you are unable to cover this cost, you can contact us.

STEP TWO: Shortly after your background screening has cleared (5-7 days), you will be emailed our volunteer application. Please complete this as soon as possible.

STEP THREE: Once you have submitted your application, you will be emailed an invitation to attend a mandatory volunteer orientation.

STEP FOUR: The Group Leader can attend a regularly scheduled orientation or an orientation can be scheduled with the entire group off-site or at the Sulzbacher.

STEP FIVE: After attending an orientation, you will now be an official Sulzbacher volunteer and ready to schedule your shift(s).

THE FINE PRINT

Make sure you are dressed safely (no sleeveless shirts, long pants) with proper footwear (closed-toed shoes). We will provide the aprons, gloves, and hair nets for you if you are in the kitchen. Also, please secure personal items in a locked car. Give yourself some time to find parking and try to arrive shortly before your shift. The Shelter entrance is under the big red roof to the left of the roundabout on campus. Notify the Front Desk you are here to volunteer and they will assist you.

Individuals 12 to 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age and are restricted from using knives and equipment.

No outside food will be permitted in the kitchen. This includes pre-cooked food and food for custom menus. All food intended to be used for meals must be ordered through the chef.
